Ableton Live 12 is a fast, fluid, and adaptive music production and performance software. It has a wide range of effects, instruments, sounds, and creative tools, allowing you to create any style of music.

Create your own sound with Live's enormous library of instruments and effects, or remix a variety of well picked Packs to create something truly unique. And, because the software allows you to do everything in real time and is totally adjustable, it's perfect for live performances and hands-on play, regardless of your setup.

Sequence your music in Live 12's linear Arrangement View, or use the Session View to improvise and experiment with ideas outside of a timeline. Live's warping allows you to change the speed and timing of any audio in real time without disrupting the music. Record MIDI or real-world instruments, vocals, or other sounds, and then utilise Live's creative features to enhance your performance, produce new ideas, or turn spontaneous moments into music. Use MIDI Transformations to modify your patterns, and MIDI Generators to generate new ideas that you may incorporate into your own. Use Sound Similarity to find presets and sounds that are comparable to the ones you're working with.

Ableton Live 12 New Features

Ableton Live 12 brings with it an array of new features.

MIDI Generators and Transformations

To resemble a guitar strum, connect successive notes and chords, draw acceleration and deceleration curves, and create ornaments and articulations, use MIDI Transformations. Use MIDI generators to your advantage to come up with creative and playful ideas that you may further develop and create on your own. Increase your potential with upgraded Max for Live Generators and Transformations.

Similarity in Sound

Start with a sample and use a variety of effective machine learning techniques to educate Live's browser to recognise comparable sounds and instrument or drum presets. As an alternative, use Drum Rack's or Simpler's Sound Similarity feature to find and replace comparable samples.

System tuning

Work outside of 12-tone equal temperament and use any MPE-compatible hardware or plugin along with Live's devices at your preferred tuning.

Scales and Keys

Within the parameters of the selected scale, modify or expand on concepts; alternatively, align the MIDI device scale with the audio clip being played.

New technology

With the help of Live's new saturation and colouring effect, Roar, you can produce a wide range of sounds, from mastering-grade warmth to erratic and wild sound degradation. Meld's dual sound engines let you to around with different timbres and textures. On the other hand, much greater expression is possible with Granulator III, the latest iteration of Robert Henke's granular synthesis device.

Improvements to the MIDI Editor

To modify MIDI in novel ways, utilise your mouse and keyboard. Split a note into multiple sections or divide it in half. Select a set of notes and link them together, or assign them to cover a certain amount of time. You may access additional tools like Fit Scale, Humanise, Add Intervals, and more from the Note Utilities panel.

Improvements to Workflow

Use Device Views and Clip Views in Layer Lives to see more of the action on your track. To obtain more information and control without interrupting the flow by moving to Session View, use Live's Mixer in Arrangement View. Finding new sounds and finding them again is made easier with the help of the browser's search history and the new tagging system. Furthermore, a track can be flattened and frozen in a single process.

Improvements to accessibility and navigation

Artists who are visually impaired can now use essential Live workflows and new keyboard shortcuts that let them to access nearly every area of the programme. Screen readers and other assistive technology are also available to them.

About Ableton Live

Live allows us limitless creativity. With Live's two modes of operation and a plethora of creative tools and sounds that can be mixed in infinite ways, the only limit to your music is your imagination. Live provides the tools you need to capture your ideas and discover new ones. Its synthesisers provide a diverse spectrum of sounds using wavetable, FM, subtractive, granular, analogue, and physical modelling architectures. Every Live edition comes with the Core Library, which incorporates vintage synths, analogue drum machines, keys, multi-sampled drums, and much more.

Perform with Live

On stage, you can perform, resequence, and remix your song in real time. Use flexible MIDI mapping to configure almost any aspect of Live for hands-on control with your controller. You can use up to 16 Macro knobs to control any number of parameters while creating your own unique combinations of instruments and effects. Find your favourite settings and save them as macro snapshots so you can create builds, drops, and immediate variations while performing.

Use Live to put your show together. Control external hardware, such as outboard effects and mixing desks. Improvise your own sounds, resample them, or process audio from others in real time.

Connect, extend, and customise

Connect Live to any MIDI controller, including MPE-compatible devices, to apply bends, slides, and pressure to individual chord notes, change subtle expressions, and use your hands to build dynamic audio tapestries.

Extend your setup using Ableton Link, a Live feature that keeps many devices in sync across a network connection. It's straightforward to utilise alongside other music applications like Reason, Serato, and an ever-expanding number of iOS apps and Link-enabled hardware.
