Novation Circuit Tracks is an all-in-one studio unit that includes everything you would need to design, create and perform your music. The system consists of two synth tracks, two MIDI tracks, four drum tracks and a groovebox that provides a hands-on production workflow. Use the sequencer to create 32-step patterns which can link up to 256 steps sequences for each track. There is the ability to go off-grid with microtiming, and you can keep the music growing with probability and pattern mutate.
Circuit Tracks is crammed with other features such as advanced FX, including synths, drums, sidechain, master compressor, and incoming audio in reverb and delay. The sound output is through two refined polyphonic digital synth tracks. You can use a microSD card to load thousands of samples which can then be modified using the four drum tracks. Alternatively, you can use the microSD card to save thousands of synth patches, samples and projects.
The all-in-one studio unit allows for flexible setup connectivity thanks to the full-size five-pin MIDI in, out, thru and analogue sync out. Control can be achieved through the two dedicated MIDI tracks which can send notes and CC automation. You can listen to your music through the analogue audio outputs in the form of stereo line out or with headphones. The power supply to the console is via a USB bus port. There is even an in-built rechargeable battery which provides up to four hours of battery life, which means it can be unplugged, taken anywhere and used when inspiration strikes.
The portable Circuit Tracks is great for all music makers, although the design element is leaning towards electronic and dance music producers. It prides itself on screenless ability however it can use the Components browser based or standalone app to explore the synth engine on screen, load samples, create patches, generate MIDI templates and backup projects.
Novation is all set to create a series of videos called Circuit Tracks Hacks. The series shows how far Circuit Tracks can be used to push the creative boundaries. We have summarised the first two videos in the series, with more to be added over the coming weeks, as and when they are released by Novation.
Video demonstrating how to create quick unpredictable melodies using random playback direction on Circuit Tracks. To start, a lead line needs to be created. Then using pattern settings, the playback direction can be changed from forwards to random. The random option determines how the steps are played every time the pattern loops. Different parameter settings can be altered, e.g., delay, to get the desired outcome.
In this video, a hit-hat sample is triggered in drum 2. In the pattern settings page, the length can be modified to one step so that the sample is triggered every 16th note. Further adjustments can be made, including duplication of the pattern into slots and instant pattern changes. Toggling sticky shift on from the setup page makes things easy and frees up a hand in the process.
New firmware update, version 1.1.5, for all Circuit Tracks owners has been released. The latest update brings with it increased sample time. Initially, you had 60 seconds of sample time which has now been extended to 3 minutes, a full 196.6 seconds to be precise. This provides more time for creative potential and flexibility when working your ideas and those samples into your tracks. To take advantage of this new extended feature, simply update your Circuit Tracks device through Components. Not only that, you will be able to take advantage of being able to customise the groovebox further with exclusive sound packs and presets. This makes for fabulous sounds creations.
