The design of the DDJREV7 simulates a professional DJM-S mixer and PLX Turntable setup. There are specialised features that are ideal for open-format and scratch DJs. To ensure the battle configuration is authentic, Pioneer has moved the tempo sliders (60mm in length) to the top of the deck sections and rotated them horizontally. This design element has not been featured on any of Pioneer DJs Controllers before and has been done to emulate a PLX turntable arrangement, just as they would be if they were in a battle. Sound can be effectively altered during performances thanks to the performance pads and Lever FX paddles now found within the mixer section.
The REV7 controller is robust and lightweight, and its intuitive functionality perfectly emulates analogue turntables and a mixer. The nicely sized 7-inch jog wheels feel like you are playing with vinyl and has the same rotational stability as a 12-inch turntable. The added motorisation also adds that perfect element for scratching. The customisable settings and two slip sheets (included inside each deck) allow you to find your ideal level of torque and friction. In addition, there is the ability to switch rotation speed between 33.5 or 45rpm and a Stop Time Setting which allows you to adjust the length of time it takes for the music to end when pause is pressed; this includes immediately if preferred.
The top plate is made from acrylic and has a finish that resembles an actual analogue record along with a spin treatment. In the middle of the jog wheels is a 3.5-inch on-jog display that provides essential information such as waveforms, Art Work, Hot Cues, DJ Logo and playback positions. Switching between the different modes is simple and features an omnidirectional display to see the details clearly from all angles. In addition, digital markers can be switched on or off, and there are even stickers included if you prefer this method instead of it being digital.
Four original sounds can be triggered rapidly using the Instant Scratch buttons. They are built into the controller, so they are available whenever you require them and do not require a laptop to be connected. They are helpful if you are in the middle of a complex scratch routine. Your own samples can also be available at the touch of a button by loading them into Scratch Bank Feature in Serato DJ Pro.
The sleek Magvel Fader Pro is smooth, robust and allows you to freely scratch. In addition, there are customisable settings that allow you to adjust the fader to suit your style.
Creativity and texture can be added through the 22 Beat FX. Three out of the twenty-two are brand new, Duck Down (a roll effect that fades when lowering the pitch), Fill Out (a roll effect that forms a roll with changing rhythm pattern and fades out with echo) and Helix Out (an effect that samples the incoming sound and repeatedly fades it out like a reverb whilst the playback speed and pitch is increased). In addition, there are five Sound Colour FX to play with also. Thanks to the audio technology within the REV7, the sound output is of the very highest quality.
Different textures can be added to the music through the Lever FX. They can be pulled down to apply effects from Serato DJ Pro or up to lock-in effects, leaving your hands free to focus on scratching or browsing tracks.
The DDJ-REV7 comes with Serato DJ Pro, where control can be obtained over the consoles' numerous features and effects. A voucher also provides access to the Pitch 'n Time DJ Expansion Pack, allowing for key shifting and syncing.
Overall, the Pioneer REV7 is ideal for parties and venues alike. The handy carry handles make transporting the controller easy. The design is aesthetically pleasing and practical thanks to the contrasting matte and hairline finishing of the aluminium top plates, differentiating the decks from the mixer.
